our Eureka Silenzio Tester

You only have 1 minute? Our test results in a nutshell.

The Eureka Silenzio is a high-quality espresso grinder that impresses us in every aspect. Why? Firstly, it boasts solid construction that is evident in every detail. Secondly, the Silenzio offers a complete package that is unmatched in its price range.

With espresso preparation, short extraction times and high pressure are key, making the right grind size crucial. Only grinders with stepless grind adjustment can consistently deliver excellent espresso. The Silenzio not only produces outstanding grind quality but also offers stepless adjustment. Another major advantage is its significantly reduced noise level compared to its predecessor. The optional timer makes it easier to grind the correct amount of beans for regular use.

The Eureka Silenzio is also capable of grinding for filter coffee. However, if you switch between espresso and coffee daily, it is advisable to have a separate grinder for coffee, as adjusting the grind size can be somewhat cumbersome with fine adjustments and requires larger quantities of coffee each time.

We highly recommend the Eureka Silenzio to those who have elevated expectations for their espresso and own a high-quality espresso machine.

When used in this combination, the Silenzio truly shines. With fresh, high-quality espresso beans, it delivers a taste experience that has completely won us over.

In which variants can I buy the coffee grinder?

You can buy the Eureka Silenzio in different colors. From the same product family, there are upgrade versions of the Eureka Perfetto and Specialità.

How does the Eureka Silenzio differ from the Perfetto and Specialità?

The Silenzio is the basic model in the newly launched product family. The so-called „Silent Technology“ and the revised design are the main features of the new product series. The Eureka Perfetto also has a digital timer display and the option of programming two different grinding quantities. In addition, the dial is color-coded, making it easier to set different coffee grinds.

The Eureka Specialità also has a display for setting the grinding time. With a slightly larger grinder of 55 mm, it also grinds a bit more coffee per second than the other two grinders – Silenzio and Perfetto.

How is the Eureka Silenzio processed?

The Silenzio has a solid steel housing, which gives it a stable stand. The classic design of the new Eureka Silenzio was largely adopted from the previous version, the Eureka Mignon MCI. Due to the slightly larger dimensions, it appears even more massive and with a higher-quality finish than its predecessor. Depending on the version, the ejector is either chrome-plated on the outside or made of plastic and has a small sieve on the inside, which largely prevents the formation of lumps at very fine grinds.

The Eureka Silenzio lives up to its name

Eureka calls the built-in technology of the insulation „Silent Technology“, which lives up to its name. In the test, the noise emission was on par with professional espresso grinders. Expressed in numbers, we measured 80 to 82 decibels during the grinding process with the Silenzio. Compared to its predecessor, the Mignon MCI, which ranges between 96 and 98 decibels, a clear difference is perceptible.

The heart of the mill – the grinding mechanism

The Eureka Silenzio features a 50 mm hardened steel disc grinder that grinds coffee beans at 1350 revolutions per minute. In principle, the productivity of the grinder can also be derived from the size of the grinding discs and the revolutions. Here, however, the rule is not „the bigger and faster, the better“, but the ratio of grinding speed and grinder size must be balanced. If it grinds too fast, the ground material will be inhomogeneous and heated too much, so that aroma substances will be lost.

The Eureka Silenzio grinds relatively slowly in relation to its grinding discs, resulting in an aromatic and uniform grind. In terms of numbers, the grinder grinds at a speed of 2.3 g/sec.

Thus, to completely fill the portafilter for a double espresso, the Silenzio needs about 7 to 8 seconds.

Cleaning is easy by hand

To clean the grinder, you must first remove the bean hopper. This is simply attached to the grinder with a rubber lip. An integrated plastic slider allows you to lock the container so that no beans fall out when you remove it.

By then removing three screws that are attached to the grinder, you can easily clean the grinder with a brush. We also recommend regular cleaning with special granules (Grindz), which you simply grind with the grinder like coffee beans. These free the grinder from coffee oils and residues and can thus significantly extend the life of your grinder.

Your questions - Our answers

How do I set the correct grind?

The Silenzio has a continuously variable grind setting. This means that even the smallest changes are possible when setting the correct grind.

Many coffee grinders are fixed to a fixed number of grinds, so sometimes you search in vain for the right setting. With the Eureka Silenzio, this is quite easy via the infinitely variable adjusting screw.

The respective grind setting can be read relatively easily on the scale, which is sufficient for a rough orientation. It only becomes difficult when different grinds are needed, for example, when the coffee type or preparation method is changed. Then it can take a while to find the right grind again.

How does the use of the timer work?

The Eureka Silenzio has an analog timer. You can use a toggle switch to choose whether you want to grind the coffee manually or with the set timer. You can set the respective grinding time and thus the amount via a dial on the side of the grinder and change it as needed. For the most accurate result, we recommend an additional weighing of the coffee grounds, because depending on the coffee bean, humidity and outside temperature, the amount can vary, despite the same grinding time.

Unlike the Silenzio, you can set the grinding time on the Perfetto and Specialità via a touch display and program two different times.

How well does the Eureka Silenzio grind for espresso?

The great strength of the Eureka Silenzio is grinding for the espresso machine. The design of the ejector, the holding fork, and the scale on the grind setting are perfectly designed for use with the portafilter.

The grind falls out of the Silenzio flakily and evenly, without lumps and without anything falling next to the portafilter. Adjusting the grind is very precise thanks to the stepless regulation.

Espresso ground with the Silenzio could fully convince us in terms of taste. We tested various espresso types together with a Rancilio Silvia and a La Marzocco Linea. There are clear differences to cheap entry-level grinders can be tasted, whereby the grinding results remained constant even with frequent and intensive use. We have not yet seen this quality in this price segment.

How well does the Eureka Silenzio grind for filter coffee?

Grinding for the various filter coffee makers is also possible with the Silenzio. The typical problem with grinders that specialize in espresso is that they grind very inconsistently at coarse settings and also produce a high amount of fine dust that makes the coffee bitter. The predecessor model in particular struggled with this, so we could only conditionally recommend the Eureka Mignon MCI for use as a filter coffee grinder.

We were able to achieve much better results with the Eureka Silenzio in the test. It produced surprisingly little fine dust (fines), but the grind is still relatively unevenly distributed in the area for hand filters and French presses. Nevertheless, the Silenzio convinced us in terms of taste, because the coffee is less over-extracted due to the lower amount of fines and the taste is more harmonious as a result.

Who is the Eureka Silenzio suitable for?

Due to the homogeneous grind and the clever details for use with the portafilter, we clearly recommend the Silenzio for espresso use. The homogeneous grind allows you to obtain very balanced and aromatic espresso. In combination with a high-quality espresso machine, such as the Rancilio Silvia or the Quickmill Orione, particularly good results can be achieved.

For demanding beginners and advanced users, the Silenzio is just right, as you can taste a clear difference in taste compared to cheaper entry-level coffee grinders.

For those who brew filter coffee occasionally in addition to espresso, the Eureka Silenzio is also a solid choice. However, those who grind and prepare filter coffee exclusively or very frequently should rather go for a dedicated filter coffee grinder, such as the Mahlkönig Vario Home.

Why is a good espresso grinder so important?

The use of a high-quality espresso grinder is at least as important as a good espresso machine. This is because the homogeneity of the ground coffee is crucial for the taste of the espresso. The more uniformly a grinder grinds the coffee, the better it can be extracted and the better the espresso tastes. Therefore, when you buy a high-quality espresso machine, we also advise you to buy a good espresso grinder for an optimal taste experience. The same applies to the preparation of filter coffee, but small differences in particle size do not affect the taste as much as they do with espresso.

Especially for the adjustment of espresso, it is advantageous if the grinder has a continuously variable grinder. This is because the smallest adjustments to the grind can lead to large differences in extraction and throughput time.

Our conclusion

The Eureka Silenzio convinced us in the test because it delivers an excellent mix of cool design, easy handling and very good grinding results at a good price. In terms of taste and workmanship, the Eureka Silenzio clearly stands out from cheaper entry-level grinders and, thanks to its general overhaul in the latest version, offers a number of useful improvements compared to the Eureka Mignon MCI.

One drawback is that when changing the grind from very fine to very coarse, you have to turn the dial a few turns to the left. If you want to change the grind back to the original position and you haven’t remembered the exact number of turns, it can take a while to find the perfect setting again.

All those who prefer the benefits of a digital timer or would like to grind their coffee a little faster can reach for the Eureka Specialità or Perfetto.
